Subject: Improving Compensation for Our Constables

Constables in Pennsylvania are elected officials that serve as independent contractors, working as peace officers for our court systems, serving warrants, transporting detainees, delivering subpoenas, and enforcing protection from abuse orders. Further, constables play a valuable role in maintaining the peace at polling places each Election Day. Rather than receive a salary, constables are compensated based on the services that they provide.

This compensation has not seen any change for well over a decade, which serves as a disincentive for individuals to run for office and work as constables. To address this, I will be introducing legislation that would increase the compensation scale for constable duties relating to civil and land-lord tenant cases and criminal cases, as well as the flat fee owed to constables for each case that they are compensated for, per docket number or named defendant.

Constables serve a crucial role in our justice system, and it is incumbent upon the General Assembly to ensure that they receive a modernized rate of compensation to ensure that they are paid appropriately for the work that they do. I look forward to your support for this long overdue adjustment to increase the quality of life for our constables while they keep the wheels of the judiciary turning smoothly.
