MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 29, 2024 04:56 PM
From: Representative Emily Kinkead
To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing September 2024 as “Hunger Action Month” in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, over 1.5 million people are experiencing food insecurity, including approximately 1 in 6 children. According to Feeding America, solving Pennsylvania’s food insecurity crisis would require an estimated $1.17 billion investment. While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides billions in supplemental money to families in need every year, too many Pennsylvania residents continue to struggle to find their next meal.

Each year in September, many of our colleagues participate in our Capitol All-Stars charity softball game, which raises money for our charitable food network. Taking that public commitment to addressing hunger in every way possible one step further, I will be introducing a resolution to recognize the month of September 2023 as “Hunger Action Month” in Pennsylvania.

This resolution would also recognize the efforts of anti-hunger organizations that work tirelessly to deliver food to those who need it most. Last year alone, Feeding America-affiliated food banks distributed over 164 million pounds of food to Pennsylvanians experiencing food insecurity.

Too many Pennsylvania residents struggle each day to find their next meal. By bringing continued awareness to the issue of food insecurity, we can make strides towards a brighter future for Pennsylvania where no one has to go hungry.

Please join me in supporting this resolution to recognize this significant challenge that faces Pennsylvanians in every neighborhood, every community, every municipality, and every county across our Commonwealth, as well as celebrating the thousands of employees and volunteers who support individuals in their times of need.
