MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 1, 2024 03:51 PM
From: Representative Ryan E. Mackenzie
To: All House members
Subject: Requiring Hotels and Other Lodging Industry Employers to Use E-Verify

Please join me as a co-sponsor of legislation to ensure that only those who are legally authorized to work in the United States are employed in the hotel and lodging industry.

This legislation would require hotels and other lodging industry employers use the federal E-Verify system for their employees. The E-Verify system an optional system run by the United States Department of Homeland Services to allow employers to verify that all of their employees are legally authorized to work in the United States.

While the federal government does not mandate the use of E-Verify, the Commonwealth has enacted several statutes to require its use by certain categories of employers, including employers providing public works and the construction industry.

According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, approximately one-third of the United States’ hospitality industry’s employees are immigrants. This legislation would protect the immigrants who are legally authorized to work in the United States, while ensuring accountability for those who would unlawfully employ those who are not.

I look forward to working with you on this important legislation.

Introduced as HB2633
