Subject: | Sky Lantern Tethering |
In the near future, I intend to reintroduce legislation that would require sky lanterns to be anchored and tethered. A sky lantern is a small hot air balloon made of paper, with an opening at the bottom where a small fire is suspended. When lit, the flame heats the air inside the lantern, thus lowering its density and causing the lantern to rise in the air. The sky lantern is only airborne for as long as the flame stays alight, after which the lantern sinks back to the ground. Sky lanterns that are allowed to float unattended pose a threat to both animals and property. Once extinguished, sky lanterns fall to the ground and parts of which can be ingested by animals causing injury or death. Furthermore, unattended sky lanterns pose a significant fire risk. This legislation does not ban sky lanterns. The legislation will seek to ensure that anchoring and tethering sky lanterns will be a protective measure for the safety of animals and property in Pennsylvania. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation to further keep our communities safe from accidental harm. This is a reintroduction of SB 1347 from the 2021-22 legislative session. Co-sponsors included: FONTANA, SCHWANK and YUDICHAK. |
