Subject: | Combatting Financial Exploitation of Seniors |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that will require the Attorney General’s Office to notify the PA Department of Aging of any investigations and enforcement actions taken within the purview of the PA Telemarketer Registration Act when those investigations and enforcement actions involve a consumer who is 65 years of age or older. The Attorney General will be directed to coordinate with the Secretary of Aging to determine the most effective and efficient manner in which information shall be shared, while ensuring strict adherence to rules of confidentiality. This improved info sharing will allow the Department of Aging to coordinate with professionals at county area agencies on aging to identify and hopefully prevent patterns of financial exploitation, such as scams and sweepstakes fraud. Senior citizens are prime targets for identity theft, charities, telemarketing, and sweepstakes fraud. Financial exploitation is the fastest growing category of elder abuse in the Commonwealth. Please join me in supporting this legislation that will provide greater protections against elder abuse for older Pennsylvanians. If you have any questions regarding this bill, please contact Joshua Herman in my office at jherman@pasen.gov |
