MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 19, 2022 04:49 PM
From: Senator Jarrett Coleman
To: All Senate members
Subject: Curriculum Transparency

Parents and the public should be able to easily review the curriculum that will be taught to children. Currently, there is no standardized, simple, and user-friendly way for parents or the public to review this information.

In the twenty-first century, there is no reason parents and the public should be able to access this information online at their convenience.

I will soon be introducing curriculum transparency legislation. This legislation will require public school districts to publish the actual curriculum for each grade and subject area on their websites so the public can review the lessons and textbooks.

As a former school board member, I am sensitive to unfunded mandates' cost on our school districts. My legislation will be modeled after HB 1332. I will be reaching out to the PA School Boards Association and other stakeholders to address some of the concerns raised, which contributed to Governor Wolf’s veto of the legislation.

This legislation is vital to ensure that parents and our communities remain informed and in the driver’s seat when it comes to their children's education. I hope you’ll join me by co-sponsoring this critical legislation.

Introduced as SB458
