Subject: | Providing Instruction to Students for Blood Donation |
It is estimated that 1 in 7 people entering a hospital needs blood. However, less than 10% of Americans donate blood on a yearly basis. This is why I plan to reintroduce SB342 from last session, directing the Department of Education, in conjunction with the Department of Health, to provide instruction to 11th- and 12th-grade students regarding donating blood. According to the American Red Cross, approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells, 5,000 units of platelets and 6,500 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S., and every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood or platelets. My bill would require blood donation education to be integrated within the health course of study currently required in public schools. I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor for this important bill. |
