Subject: | Lake Erie Groin Fee Exemption |
Erie County residents and visitors are fortunate to have quick access to the beautiful coast of Lake Erie as well as Presque Isle State Park. In order to preserve the shoreline, structures can be used to stabilize a stretch of the beach against erosion. These structures are referred to as “groins”. Groins are not defined in statute and are categorized under commercial structures. The responsibility to maintain this shoreline falls on our Commonwealth agencies, local government, and private individuals. Unfortunately, groin structures owned by private individuals are required to pay excessive fees to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). This fee has skyrocketed from $25 to $750 annually. DEP and other government entities that own and operate groins are exempt from the fee. Please join me is supporting this important piece of legislation exempting private individuals from the excessive fees being charged to maintain the shorelines of Lake Erie. |
