MEMORANDUM

To: All Senate members
Subject: Designating "PIAA Officials Appreciation Weeks" in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will reintroduce a resolution to designate the weeks of October 1-7, 2023, January 7-13, 2024, and April 14-20, 2024, as "PIAA Officials Appreciation Week” in Pennsylvania. The three designated weeks take place in the respective Fall, Winter and Spring sports seasons that high school students participate in throughout our Commonwealth.

Most PIAA officials work a full-time day job and after which they return home, eat, change and then are on the road again to give their time so that someone else’s child can safely play a sport. The next morning, they wake up and do it all over again. They do it because they love the game, they believe in educational-based athletics and they want to be involved with Pennsylvania’s student-athletes.

The participation of our officials contributes directly to the positive development of our children. The safe environments they help foster have a direct, positive impact on our children’s physical and mental health. They provide an outlet where friendships can be fostered and life lessons of teamwork and determination can be instilled. Just as important they help to ensure that our kids have safe fun.

Officiating is a very difficult job, considering the pressure officials are under in making the correct calls while the teams are in action and the fans are rooting on opposing sides. Having “PIAA Officials Appreciation Weeks” helps bring awareness in our communities so that officials know how thankful we are for them and the work they do. Having a game, especially where the rules are followed, would not be possible without them.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to acknowledge and thank our PIAA officials who maintain order and the safety of our student-athletes on fields, courts and other athletic facilities throughout our Commonwealth.
