Subject: Recognizing October 2023 as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

We will soon present a resolution designating October 2023 as Pennsylvania's Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

It is time to increase public knowledge of pregnancy loss and advance dialogue about it. Any form of loss is never simple or easy to discuss, but individuals need to know that their sorrow is acknowledged and that they have a place in their communities to express their despondency. We hope that this recognition inspires our constituents to feel more supported and more likely to use the resources they need to heal if they are surrounded by individuals and organizations that understand what they are going through.

The United Nations reported that decreased investments in maternal and newborn health have caused global progress in reducing the number of fatalities among expectant mothers, new moms, and infants to stagnate for the past eight years. More specifically, in the United States, more than a million pregnancies in end in miscarriage or stillbirth every year, per the Centers for Disease Control.

Join us in recognizing October 2023 as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. I hope we can work together to eradicate the stigma around openly talking about these experiences, which so many of us suffer with, and to acknowledge that many of our people deal with miscarriage and other pregnancy losses every year.
