MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 3, 2023 10:22 AM
From: Senator Amanda M. Cappelletti
To: All Senate members
Subject: Paid Leave for Pregnancy Loss

The loss of a pregnancy is one of the most difficult experiences people who wish to start or expand their families can experience. Too often, individuals who have experienced a miscarriage are not given time to process the tremendous mental and physical loss. This often means being expected to return immediately to a workplace that fails to even recognize the miscarriage as a loss. We can and must do better to support individuals who experience pregnancy loss.

An important step in improving our response to pregnancy loss is providing paid time off from work for people who experience it. Under this important bill, a worker would be provided three workdays of paid leave if they experience a pregnancy loss, such as a miscarriage or stillbirth.  It is time we value individuals and couples who decide to take the personal and often difficult  steps towards parenthood. Pennsylvania needs to modernize our leave policies and give workers time to heal and grieve.

Please join me in this effort to lend support to people wishing to start or expand their families, no matter the outcome of their pregnancy.
