Subject: | Property Tax Constitutional Amendment for Seniors |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that would empower local officials to make decisions related to property taxes that best fit their locales, while also providing opportunities for much needed property tax relief to senior citizens. According to a recent report, the Independent Fiscal Office projects that Pennsylvania’s population over the age of 80 will grow more than 20% between 2025 and 2030. Even more staggering is a report from the National Council on Aging that states roughly one-in-three, or more than 17 million, older adults nationwide are economically insecure. Many of these older residents have owned and lived in their homes for decades, faithfully paying property taxes each year, despite having no children in their respective school systems. Additionally, we must give our local partners as many options as possible to assess property taxes in such a way that best serves their locality and their taxpayers. Often times, local officials have the best perspective to make decisions that benefit their communities and shouldn’t be limited by the General Assembly. Accordingly, my legislation will provide for an amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution that would permit local governments to expand property tax exemptions for senior property owners. This legislation would ensure that our seniors are able to enjoy their golden years with dignity, while permitting the local officials to make the best decisions for their local communities. Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this very important piece of legislation. |
