Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system. Parkinson’s symptoms (motor and non-motor) generally develop slowly over years. People may experience tremors, muscle difficulties, walking and balance issues, sleeping disorders, cognitive and behavioral impairments. Unfortunately, this is the fastest growing neurological disease and the second most progressive neurodegenerative disease. More than one million people live with PD in the U.S. One person every six minutes is diagnosed. Parkinson’s costs the U.S. $52 billion every year. The prevalence of this disease will rise to 1.2 million by 2030 and is expected to double by 2040. By 2037, the disease will cost the U.S. $80 billion every year. The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, along with many volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical professionals, are working on fighting, treating and raising awareness. "Shorts Day" originated in 1987. It has become “SHAKE AND FREEZE®️ Day/"Shorts Day", a Parkinson’s Awareness/FUNdraising day, in memory of eight family members with Parkinson’s Disease. The idea is to wear shorts on the “short” est day of the year (Winter Solstice and Dr. James Parkinson’s death anniversary) to “shake” and “freeze” so that someday people with Parkinson’s won’t have to. Shaking (tremors) and freezing (temporary, involuntary inability to move) are symptoms of PD. This event raises money for the Michael J Fox Foundation. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to recognize December 21, 2023 as SHAKE AND FREEZE®️ Day/"Shorts Day" (A Parkinson’s Awareness Day) so that, hopefully soon, a Parkinson’s cure will be found. |
