Subject: | Recognizing Period Positivity Day in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution that recognizes December 13th, 2023, as Period Positivity Day in Pennsylvania.
Period Positivity Day recognizes that all women and menstruating individuals experience menstruation differently and we need to embrace periods in our society. Some suffer from physically, mentally, or emotionally taxing menstruation cycles. However, social taboo and gender stereotypes discourage us from even talking about it. In most cases, many menstruators remain in the dark about menstruation and menstrual disorders, preventing them from receiving necessary care and support.
The reality is that heavy bleeding, or menorrhagia, affects more than 10 million American women and menstruating individuals every year. This means that one in every five menstruators is impacted. It is also estimated that three of every four menstruators have experienced premenstrual syndrome, a combination of physical and emotional symptoms such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, insomnia, and more before their period.
The widespread health issues that menstruators go through should prompt more conversations and educational focus on menstrual health. Misinformation or lack of information can lead to misconceptions. Educating all people is crucial to combat menstrual stigma to ensure long-term normalization of menstruation in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and around the world. Period Positivity Day is the first step to encourage us to learn and talk about the challenges that menstruators go through.
Please join us in normalizing menstruation as an integral part of sexual and reproductive health and rights by co-sponsoring this resolution to recognize Period Positivity Day in Pennsylvania. |
