MEMORANDUM

To: All Senate members
Subject: Designating Hershey's Kisses as the Official State Candy of Pennsylvania

This Valentine’s Day, we invite you to join us in the sweet endeavor, cooked up by a group of Bucks County middle schoolers, of recognizing the Hershey Kiss as Pennsylvania’s official state candy.

Our official state symbols represent the best of the Commonwealth’s history, traditions, and values. Hershey’s Kisses are a rich treat reflective of the Commonwealth’s rich heritage and prosperous economy, and immediately conjure feelings of love and acceptance synonymous with Pennsylvania’s founding ideals. Hershey’s Kisses were first manufactured in Pennsylvania in 1907. Throughout the years, Hershey’s Kisses have become an iconic candy not only throughout the United States, but around the world. With 70 million Kisses produced here every day, the enduring popularity of Hershey’s Kisses sweetens many sectors of the Commonwealth’s economy, such as the dairy farmers who supply the fresh local milk used to give Hershey’s Kisses their delicious creamy taste.

It is especially heartwarming to see Hershey’s Kisses – and their legacy – being celebrated by Pennsylvania’s youth, particularly the students from Mr. Loughran’s class at Newtown Middle School in Bucks County, who have led the efforts to introduce this legislation and are committed to seeing it become law. These students not only conceived of this sweet idea, they met with Hershey executives, lobbied legislators, drafted bill language and generated media attention to share their love and ensure that the Hershey’s Kiss becomes our state candy.

We share these students’ belief that denoting the Hershey Kiss as the official candy of the Commonwealth will not only bring more attention to our state but also will commemorate a company and candy that has had a deep influence on our state’s economy and values.

We invite you to join us in cosponsoring this legislation.
