Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 4, 2024 03:13 PM
From: Senator Scott Martin
To: All Senate members
Subject: Designating March 9, 2024, as "Pennsylvania Wrestling Day"

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution that designates March 9, 2024, as “Pennsylvania Wrestling Day.”

Pennsylvania has a long, rich tradition of producing championship-caliber wrestlers and is considered nationally as a perennial powerhouse regarding the sport overall. While historically elite programs with universities drive much of that conversation, just as significant are the programs in our local communities and high schools.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, participation in wrestling at the local level in the 2022-23 season reached a record 305,593 athletes – a 16% jump from the prior season and greater than the total high school sports participation rate increase of roughly 3%. While a big portion of that jump can be attributed to an increase amongst boys wrestlers, the explosion of female wrestlers and associated programs nationally is something to truly celebrate. One in six high school wrestlers are now girls, making it the fastest-growing sport in the nation.

Pennsylvania has experienced this growth as well. I’m proud to say that for the first time ever this wrestling season, thanks to the efforts of so many student-athletes, parents, organizations and volunteers, there are now 183 schools competing in Girls Wrestling according to the PIAA. As a result, for the first time ever girls will have the opportunity to compete in their own PIAA Championship Playoff like their male counterparts the weekend of March 7-9, 2024.

Wrestling teaches self-reliance, self-discipline and teamwork, while fostering mental growth and a physically healthy lifestyle. Even more importantly, these life lessons translate over to so many professional development skills that can be determining factors in one’s overall success. That is why activities like this should continue to be celebrated and promoted.

I ask for your support by co-sponsoring this resolution that will highlight the benefits of wrestling and tout the success of our local boys and girls wrestling programs.
