Subject: | National Guard and Veterans Day at the Capitol (June 4) |
I will be introducing a resolution recognizing June 4th at “National Guard and Veterans Day at the Capitol.” In 1747, Benjamin Franklin formed the "Associators," the precursor to the PA National Guard. And in 1755, the General Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania formally enacted its first militia law. The past 264 years have seen much cooperation and support from the General Assembly for the Pennsylvania militia, the Pennsylvania National Guard and the soldiers and airmen who proudly serve this Commonwealth and this nation. Today, Pennsylvania has one of the largest National Guard forces in the nation. Meanwhile, with over 700,000 veterans, this Commonwealth has one of the largest veteran populations in the country. Pennsylvania has numerous programs serving our veterans community, including the award-winning PA Vet Connect program. On June 4th, the Department of Military & Veterans Affairs and the National Guard will be at the Capitol with displays in the East Wing Rotunda -- a morning presentation to legislators – a press conference highlighting National Guard Recruitment & Retention -- and the Adjutant General addressing the Senate at the start of Session. This year's theme, Together We Serve: Past, Present, Future" pays tribute to our citizens, soldiers and airmen of the PA National Guard, veterans of all services and components who have served and their families. Please join me in supporting the Pennsylvania National Guard and our Veterans by signing onto this resolution, which is similar to SR 335 of 2022. |
