Subject: | Designating May 14, 2024 as IgA Neuropathy Awareness Day |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating May 14, 2024 as IgA Neuropathy (IgAN) Awareness Day in Pennsylvania. IgAN (aka Berger’s disease) is a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the kidneys and is a lesser known cause of chronic kidney disease which affects 1 in 7 Americans. Specifically, IgAN is where immunoglobulin A (IgA) — a protein that usually helps the body fight infection —builds up in the kidneys and clogs the tiny filtering units and can lead to blood in the urine (hematuria) and protein in the urine (proteinuria). At this time, there is no cure for this disease. Currently, many patients face delays in being correctly diagnosed, and existing treatments only focus on slowing the progress of the disease and preventing complications. However, there are many new clinical trials underway with several new treatment options that have been newly approved. Please join me in helping raise awareness for IgAN and designate May 14, 2024 as IgA Neuropathy Awareness Day in Pennsylvania. |
