Subject: | Ensuring Illegal Migrants Are Not Eligible for Public Housing |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to ensure that illegal migrants are not eligible for public housing in our Commonwealth. Pennsylvanians should not continue to bear the costs of President Biden's disastrous border policies. In 2021, HUD waived the requirements for verifying citizenship for individuals applying for the Emergency Housing Voucher Program, effectively making every illegal migrant eligible for a housing voucher. This waiver has granted housing authorities across the nation significant latitude regarding immigration status, a troubling development for communities with housing authorities suffering from poor leadership focused solely on accessing additional federal funds. Additionally, current federal requirements allow illegal migrants to be the head of the household and still receive housing assistance. Former HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge testified earlier this year before the House Financial Services Committee, stating that HUD places no restrictions on local housing authorities using funds to house illegal migrants, which is troubling and, for some programs, directly violates federal regulations. HUD also lacks information regarding the number of illegal migrants currently housed in federally assisted housing. My legislation will ensure that our communities are safe from the continued mismanagement of HUD by prohibiting housing authorities in this Commonwealth from providing housing assistance to illegal migrants. This legislation will also clarify that the veterans preference applies to the Emergency Housing Voucher Program. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
