MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 13, 2024 10:03 AM
From: Senator Daniel Laughlin
To: All Senate members
Subject: Keeping Seniors Safe at Home

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation focused on enhancing the safety and well-being of seniors in their homes. This essential legislation aims to improve the quality of life for our senior citizens by promoting proper education of the Living Independently for the Elderly (LIFE) Program.

As our population ages, it becomes increasingly important to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of our seniors. Many prefer to remain in their own homes and communities rather than move to institutional care facilities. The LIFE Program, a proven and effective care model, provides a comprehensive array of health and social services to help seniors live independently.

The LIFE Program offers a comprehensive care model that includes:
  • Primary and specialty medical care
  • Nursing care
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Social services
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Transportation
  • Medication management

This holistic approach addresses the multifaceted needs of seniors, reducing hospitalizations and nursing home admissions, and ultimately saving costs for the healthcare system.

My proposal aims to ensure Pennsylvanians are properly educated to make informed decisions regarding their long-term care options available to them. Seniors who receive personalized care plans that allow them to stay in their homes and communities, maintaining their independence and dignity, experience an improved quality of life.

LIFE programs have historically proven to reduce emergency room visits, hospital admissions and readmissions and long-term nursing home placements, resulting in significant cost savings for Medicare and Medicaid.

I urge you to join me in cosponsoring this important legislation to ensure our seniors receive the care and support they deserve – AT HOME. By promoting and expanding the LIFE program, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless Pennsylvanians.

Introduced as SB1335
