MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 20, 2024 04:12 PM
From: Senator Devlin J. Robinson
To: All Senate members
Subject: CPR and First Aid Requirement for High School Students

In the near future, I will introduce legislation to clarify that high school students must successfully complete a CPR and first aid course in order to graduate.

Recently in my district, a young FedEx driver collapsed suddenly and was unable to breathe. Thankfully, my neighbor and I were able to resuscitate him as we waited for emergency responders to arrive, and he is now on the road to recovery. This frightening incident reminded me of just how crucial it is to have CPR and first aid training, because we never know when a friend's, neighbor's, or stranger’s life may depend on us.

My legislation will expand on Act 7 of 2019, which requires guidelines and curriculums to be provided by the Department of Education for CPR training in high schools. Specifically, my bill will state that students must successfully complete a CPR and first aid course between the grades of 9-12 to graduate.

Please join me in working together to better equip our next generation in providing one of the most basic, yet important, tools we can have which can certainly save lives.
