Subject: | September as Mushroom Month |
We will soon introduce a resolution to recognize September 2024 as “Mushroom Month” in Pennsylvania. American mushroom farming began on a farm in Chester County around 1885 and today over half of America's mushrooms are grown there. The town of Kennett Square (located in Chester County) is now recognized as the "Mushroom Capital of the World." Pennsylvania leads the country in mushroom growing. The 68 mushroom farms in the state produced 63 percent of all U.S. white mushrooms, valued at $554.4 million. PA mushroom farms are family owned and operated, some for as many as four generations. Farms use both conventional and organic agricultural practices and vary in size. The success of the mushroom industry greatly contributes to the economies of Chester County and this Commonwealth while preserving this Commonwealth’s agricultural traditions and customs. We hope you will join us in sponsoring this resolution. |
