Subject: | Designating September 2024 as "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I will reintroduce a resolution similar to Senate Resolution 163 designating September 2024 as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. According to a recently published research brief from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, over the course of the last eight years, there has been a range of 2,500 to just over 3,000 annual inpatient hospitalizations for Pennsylvania children with a diagnosis of cancer. I cannot imagine the pain and fear of hearing that one of my children has been diagnosed with cancer, and yet over the years I have met too many that have had such an experience. However, these families show true strength as their brave little children fight every day with a smile on their face and unshakable resolve. Amazingly, these kids and their families despite their own personal struggles continue to advocate for better treatments, more resources, and greater awareness of these conditions, not only for their own families, but for every young person who will be diagnosed in the future. Their dedication will always be an inspiration to me, and it reminds us all why we must keep up the fight. This resolution honors their fight and raises awareness with the general public in ways that they can help. For example, among the many deserving charitable causes, citizens can learn more about, and potentially donate to, the Pediatric Cancer Research Fund that can be found on the Pennsylvania Department of Health website here. Just as important, this resolution will recognize the hard work and dedication of the medical professionals who heal, comfort and support these brave kids. Pennsylvania’s consistent and collaborative efforts over the last four years have led to over $40 million in historic funding towards pediatric cancer research and allowed us to spearhead initiatives to create greater access to resources to keep these children connected to and supported by their peers while they fight their tremendous battle. Together the people of our Commonwealth have helped to provide hope that in turn has catapulted us to the status of a national leader in the fight against pediatric cancer. Previous co-sponsors of SR 163 were: Vogel, Bartolotta, Phillips-Hill, Costa, Hughes, Fontana, Haywood, Langerholc, Brooks, Tartaglione, Brewster, Santarsiero, Laughlin, Regan, Dush, Cappelletti, Schwank, Hutchinson, Pennycuick, Brown, Mastriano and Robinson. Please join me in cosponsoring this important resolution to continue to raise awareness and show our support for our family members, neighbors, friends and colleagues affected by pediatric cancer. |
