MEMORANDUM

To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing October 2024 as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

In the near future, we will introduce a resolution to recognize October 2024 as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

It is time to increase public knowledge of pregnancy loss and advance dialogue surrounding it. Any form of loss is never simple or easy to discuss, but individuals need to know that their sorrow is acknowledged and that they have a place in their communities to express their despondency. We hope that this recognition inspires our constituents to feel more supported, knowing there are individuals and organizations that understand what they’re going through, and encourage them to seek the resources they need to heal.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than one million pregnancies in the United States end in stillbirth or miscarriage each year, and up to one in four people who can become pregnant will experience miscarriage or infant loss in their lifetime. These experiences are not uncommon, but many people are unaware of how prevalent pregnancy loss is until they experience it firsthand. There is a stigma and lack of openness about these experiences, and many feel isolated in their grief. It is our hope that through introducing this resolution, we can end the stigma around pregnancy and infant loss and begin to talk more openly about these experiences that many of us must go through.

Please join us in recognizing October 2024 as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.
