Subject: | Designating November 14, 2024, as "World Diabetes Day" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution to recognize November 14, 2024, as “World Diabetes Day” in Pennsylvania. Diabetes is a chronic condition that impairs the body’s ability to convert food into energy. It occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or when cells become resistant to it, leading to high blood sugar levels. According to the latest CDC data, about 38.4 million Americans (11.6% of the population) live with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes, an increase from 34.1 million three years ago. Additionally, around 98 million Americans have prediabetes, which significantly raises the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. This rise in diabetes is linked to various health complications, including heart disease, kidney issues, nerve damage, and mental health concerns. While there is no cure, risk factors can be managed through a healthy diet, physical activity, and prescribed medications. I invite you to co-sponsor this resolution and help raise awareness about maintaining a healthy lifestyle to combat the growing prevalence of diabetes in Pennsylvania. |
