Subject: | Recognizing the 555th Anniversary of the Birth of Guru Nanak |
Guru Nanak, considered the first of Sikh Gurus, was the founder of Sikhism and is considered one of the greatest religious innovators of all time. Born in 1469 in Punjab, India, Guru Nanak’s progressive philosophies continue to be socially significant long after his death in 1539. Known as Southeast Asia’s “Renaissance Reformer,” his social teachings denounced the caste system and taught that everyone is equal, regardless of caste, creed or gender. In addition to criticizing caste and gender inequalities, he recognized the whole human race as one, with men and women being equals. During his life, Guru Nanak traveled extensively, spreading his message. The Sikh community, which began immigrating to the United States more than a century ago, plays an important role in the Commonwealth today and continues the traditions of their religion’s founder, including preaching overcoming division and hatred. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and recognizing November 15, 2024 as the 555th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak. |
