MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 5, 2024 11:04 AM
From: Representative Aerion Abney
To: All House members
Subject: Social Worker Licensure Compact Model

Increased mental health workforce shortages and a greater need for access to mental health services pose a significant challenge across the Commonwealth, especially in rural areas.
Social workers are required to obtain a separate license in each state which they seek to practice. As a result, this process is often labor-intensive and time consuming.

Therefore, I plan to introduce legislation that would authorize our Commonwealth to join the Social Work Licensure Compact. This legislation would allow social workers who have or are eligible for an active license in Pennsylvania to apply for a multi-state license. Additionally, the Social Work Licensure Compact would permit Pennsylvania to provide social workers the mobility to serve clients across state lines and would permit the use of expanded tele-health technology. This would help address the workforce shortage, create greater employment opportunities for licensees and provide easier access to care for Pennsylvanians.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation in order to support our social workers and improve continuity of care.
