Subject: | Making Our Streets Safer for Pedestrians (former HB1056) |
Not stopping for someone in a crosswalk isn’t merely inconsiderate — it can be lethal. In 2021, over 43% of pedestrian fatalities occurred when the pedestrian was entering an intersection, mid-block crossing, or driveway entrance. As the number of these accidents rises, we need to look at ways to make our streets safer. That is why I am introducing legislation requiring vehicles on both sides of a roadway to yield the right-of-way and stop for pedestrians lawfully within an intersection or adjacent crosswalk. Vehicles must remain stopped as the pedestrian is crossing the street. If enacted, a violation would result in a $50 fine or a $200 if the violation occurs in a school zone. Requiring vehicles to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk is a commonsense change that can save lives. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
