Subject: | Shelter Animal Adoption Tax Credit (former HB1057) |
Over 6 million dogs and cats are currently in shelters around the United States awaiting to be adopted into their forever homes. It is estimated that more than one million of those adoptable pets are euthanized in the United States each year. Individuals who adopt shelter pets instead of buying them help to dramatically reduce the number of euthanized animals. Given these statistics, I plan to introduce legislation that would not only encourage people to adopt one of the many animals in our Commonwealth’s shelters, but also help cover certain costs associated with the adoption and care of an adopted pet. Under my bill, taxpayers could claim a tax credit of $100 per pet for up to three animals adopted from a shelter during the qualifying tax year. Providing this tax break to Pennsylvanians who adopt a shelter pet not only will help reduce the number of homeless animals in our shelters, but it will provide pet owners in our Commonwealth with some relief for the related expenses. For many Pennsylvanians, pets go on to become an integral, loving part of our families. The positive impact of adopting a pet goes beyond the love and joy they provide us; pet adoptions help overburdened shelters take in other stray, abused, and lost animals and help reduce pet homelessness in the community. Therefore, I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this tax credit to help Pennsylvanians and their pets.
