Subject: | Reducing the Cost of Commutes |
The average Pennsylvanian faces a commute of around 27 minutes to and from work each day. Three quarters of these commuters drive; a mere four percent utilize public transit to go to and from work. Rising gas prices continue to affect everyone in our state. Employers can only do so much to keep up with inflation, and retaining workers continues to be an issue.
I will be introducing legislation that will require employers of more than 20 people, who are not part of a collective bargaining agreement, to offer a transportation fringe benefit to their workers. This benefit will allow an employee to set aside wages on a pre-tax basis, which is then only made available for the purchase of certain eligible transportation services, including transit passes and commuter highway vehicle travel.
It is my hope that by enacting this legislation, we will accomplish three goals: keep more money in Pennsylvanians’ pockets; create an opportunity for employers to provide benefits to their employees at no cost of their own; and encourage hard-working people across the state to utilize more public transit and car-pooling options.
Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
