Rural communities in Pennsylvania often face unique challenges in providing adequate transportation options due to their dispersed populations, limited infrastructure, and geographical constraints. To address these challenges, I will be reintroducing HR 174 from the 2023-2024 Session that directs the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to conduct a comprehensive study on mass/public transit in Pennsylvania’s rural communities. This study will: - Assess the existing transportation infrastructure, including road networks, bridges, and mass/public transit services in rural communities across the state.
- Identify the transportation needs, challenges, and priorities of rural residents, considering factors such as employment, education, healthcare, and access to essential services.
- Evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of various mass/public transit options, such as bus services, ride-sharing programs, on-demand services, and innovative solutions using emerging technologies.
- Examine successful models and best practices implemented in other states to address transportation challenges in rural areas.
- Engage with local communities, stakeholders, leaders, transportation experts, and other relevant entities to gather input, feedback, and insights throughout the study process.
- Develop a comprehensive set of recommendations and strategies to enhance mass/public transit options in rural communities, considering cost-effectiveness, environmental impact, and long-term sustainability.
Access to efficient and reliable transportation is essential for the economic, social, and environmental well-being of all communities, yet many rural areas continue to be underserved and isolated due to inadequate transportation options. It’s time for us to explore solutions on how to address the challenges our rural communities have been facing. Please join me in sponsoring this resolution. |
