Subject: Protecting Patients from Surprise Out-of-Network Costs

Imagine you go to your doctor, whom you have been going to for years, for a routine appointment. This time, you get a surprise bill in the mail, because your doctor failed to tell you that they no longer accept your health insurance.

Currently, health care providers have no obligation to tell patients when the provider drops out of a health insurer’s network. As a result, some patients are unknowingly receiving care from out-of-network providers, resulting in unexpected medical bills.

That is why we will be introducing a bill that would require health care providers to inform their patients when the provider no longer accepts their insurance. By requiring providers to give timely notification of the insurances they accept, this bill would help patients avoid surprise medical bills and seek alternative in-network providers before their care is affected.

This bill would also allow patients to make necessary adjustments, reducing the risk of disrupting treatment. This legislation will go a long way in alleviating the financial and emotional stress that arises when patients unexpectedly lose in-network access to their healthcare providers. Please join us in protecting patients from surprise bills and support this bill.
