Subject: | Green Alert System for At-Risk Missing Veterans |
Many of our courageous veterans have served our nation valiantly by defending freedom around the world. Unfortunately, too many service members come home and live with mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).[1] Having PTSD, or another combat-related mental health condition, increases the possibility of harming oneself, placing too many veterans in an at-risk condition.[2] In an effort to bolster support for service members returning home from military service, I will be introducing legislation that would create a Green Alert system in Pennsylvania. This system would be issued the same way Amber Alerts are currently issued in the Commonwealth, appearing on electronic traffic signs and text messages. An alert would be transmitted to the public when a veteran with a service-connected health issue is reported missing, greatly improving the chances of securing a safe return home. Just as we would not let missing soldiers lie on a battlefield without sending search and rescue teams to look for them, let’s not let our veterans go missing without doing all we can to find them and provide them with the help and assistance they need. Please join me in support of this important legislation creating a Green Alert system in Pennsylvania. [1] (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, How Common is PTSD in Veterans?, n.d.)
