| Over the years, our legislature has sought to improve safety measures in highway work zones by implementing policies such as requiring headlights to be turned on in all posted work zones, enhancing penalties for reckless driving in work zones, and, most recently, renewing the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program. All of these efforts have been made in an attempt to change driver behavior and ensure that everyone on our roads – workers and travelers – safely make it home to their families. With the goal of promoting the critical need for safe driving in highway work zones, I am introducing a resolution recognizing the week of April 21-25, 2025, as “National Work Zone Awareness Week” (NWZAW) in Pennsylvania. Now in its 26th year, NWZAW is an annual event that promotes safe driving habits in highway work zones at the beginning of the roadway construction season. For years, NWZAW events focused on reducing work zone crashes and fatalities. These events have taken place across the country with partnerships between state departments of transportation, national road safety organizations, private companies, and advocates. This year, as construction crews are busy preparing to make needed improvements to the 120,000 miles of roadway and thousands of bridges throughout the state, we must do our part in educating the people of Pennsylvania on the importance of slowing down and being extra cautious when traveling through work zones. I hope that you will join me in recognizing “National Work Zone Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania. |
