Subject: | Designating April as Low Head Dam Public Safety Awareness Month |
As the weather warms up, most of us spend more time in the great outdoors enjoying sunshine and nature. For thousands of Pennsylvanians, those sunny days mean fun out on the water. Our Commonwealth is rich with recreational opportunities on our over 80,000 miles of streams and rivers. With an abundance of waterway activities such as boating, swimming, and kayaking, it is important to make sure everyone is aware of the dangers lurking out there such as low head dams. A low head dam is a man-made structure spanning fully across the banks of a river or stream. When water levels rise downstream, a submerged hydraulic jump can form and trap objects or people. Low head dams are often referred to as drowning machines because of the dangerous, lethal current they can create. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania leads the nation in low head dam deaths. April has been recognized nationally as Low Head Dam Public Safety Awareness Month by the American Society of Civil Engineers. This resolution would designate April as Low Head Dam Public Safety Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. This resolution will not only aid in the awareness and education of low head dam dangers, but it may also help save lives. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
