Subject: | Black Studies in K-12 Curriculum |
In the near future, I will reintroduce SB331 from the previous session which expands access to Black history in Pennsylvania's K-12 curriculum. Education and a fully integrated curriculum play an important role in creating a society that is open to people of all races. Recently, as a result of the Black Lives Matter movement, we have seen a significant increase in students wanting to know more about Black history and teachers wanting to integrate the history of the Black experience into a variety of courses they teach. This bill allows this important goal to be accomplished by having the PA Department of Education (PDE) collect or develop relevant curriculum units and materials and place them on PDE’s Equity Hub. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
