| Subject: | Child Abuse Reporting and Military Personnel |
| In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation in order to protect children from child abuse that may involve a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. My proposal will recognize the “Family Advocacy Program,” that has been established by the U.S. Department of Defense to address child abuse and domestic abuse in military communities. Current state law does not require child protective services (CPS) to identify military families in cases of child abuse and neglect, nor are they required to report cases to the appropriate military authorities. This legislation will require CPS to immediately give notice to the Family Advocacy Program by contacting the program’s representative for the Commonwealth or the service member’s assigned military installation, if the service member is the subject of a report due to an investigation. In addition, my proposal will require specific information to be included in the notice to the service member’s duty station or the advocacy program. This legislation was previously introduced last session as Senate Bill 1035 and co-sponsors included: Brown, Fontana, Brewster, Phillips–Hill, Baker, Haywood, Schwank, Bartolotta, Boscola, Robinson, J. Ward and Muth. Please consider joining me in this important legislation to further protect children of child abuse. |
