Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2025 - 2026 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 4, 2024 12:41 PM
From: Senator Greg Rothman
To: All Senate members
Subject: Equipping Local Police with Necessary Safety Tools (RADAR)

I intend to introduce legislation to equip our local police to keep communities safe.

Currently, Pennsylvania trails 49 other states in traffic safety technology. Whereas every other state’s local police departments have the option to utilize radar for traffic enforcement, Pennsylvania local police are forced to use outdated and less accurate technology to keep our streets safe.

My legislation will allow municipalities to pass ordinances instituting the use of RADAR by the local departments. Nothing in the legislation requires municipalities to take this action if undesired, and the bill specifically prohibits quotas and revenue generation abuse.

This legislation is based on Senate Bill 459 from last session, which passed the Senate Transportation Committee unanimously. This updated bill includes clarifying language and stakeholder feedback to strengthen the bill.

I ask that you join me in cosponsoring this historically bipartisan effort to keep our communities safe.
