Subject: | Developing a comprehensive strategy to meet PA’s energy needs |
Every Pennsylvania resident and business relies on affordable and reliable electricity. Today, the Commonwealth’s energy producers are the largest net exporters of power in the region. By the end of the decade, 40 gigawatts of generating capacity will be retired from the grid. Policies enacted by neighboring states and the federal government will impact the generation methods utilized by the replacement capacity and that could result in a gap between supply and regional demands. I will be reintroducing SR 295 from last session directing the Joint State Government Commission to conduct an assessment and issue recommendations that can serve as the basis for a comprehensive state energy strategy. It is in the best interest of Pennsylvanians to proactively evaluate the changing generation mix and develop a strategy that ensures adequacy, affordability, and reliability for the Commonwealth.
This assessment will be an important first step in preparing Pennsylvania for the future. It was previously cosponsored by Senators Pennycuick, Argall, Flynn, Vogel, Phillips-Hill, Brown and Culver. I hope that you will join me in sponsoring this important legislation. |
