A RESOLUTION

 

1Commemorating the month of January 2013 as "Radon Awareness
2Month" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The United States Surgeon General and a consortium
4of health agencies throughout the United States have joined
5forces to promote awareness of the leading cause of lung cancer
6for nonsmokers; and

7WHEREAS, The American Lung Association, the Centers for
8Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute
9all agree that radon is a national health problem, and they
10encourage radon testing of housing during an awareness drive
11this January; and

12WHEREAS, Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible and
13odorless radioactive gas not isolated to certain geographical
14areas or housing types, and radon problems have been detected in

1homes in every county in the United States; and

2WHEREAS, One in 15 American homes contains high levels of
3radon, exposing millions of Americans to this dangerous gas, and
4radon caused more American fatalities last year than carbon
5monoxide, fires and handguns combined; and

6WHEREAS, If a home has not been tested for radon in the past
7two years, the Surgeon General and the Environmental Protection
8Agency urge household residents to locate a qualified radon test
9kit or a qualified radon testing company and test their
10residence for radon; and

11WHEREAS, The month of January 2013 has been targeted as Radon
12Awareness Month nationally, and educational information about
13radon may be obtained at www.RadonWeek.org; therefore be it

14RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
15month of January 2013 as "Radon Awareness Month" in
16Pennsylvania.
