        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 9, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the 177th anniversary of the birth of Brevet Major
     2     General Samuel Kurtz Zook.

     3     WHEREAS, Samuel Kurtz Zook was born on March 27, 1822, in
     4  West Whiteland Township, Pennsylvania; and
     5     WHEREAS, Zook's family moved in 1837 to Valley Forge, where
     6  his home still stands as a park ranger office; and
     7     WHEREAS, Zook was educated at the Strode Academy in West
     8  Chester; and
     9     WHEREAS, Zook rose through the ranks, serving in the Chester
    10  County Militia Troop, 110th Pennsylvania Militia, Union Troop of
    11  Chester and Delaware Counties, New York State Militia and New
    12  York Volunteer Infantry before being promoted to brigadier

     1  general commanding the 52nd, 57th and 66th New York Infantry and
     2  the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry; and
     3     WHEREAS, Zook was mortally wounded on July 2, 1863, during
     4  the Battle of Gettysburg and died on July 3, 1863; and
     5     WHEREAS, Zook was promoted to brevet major general for
     6  meritorious service during the Civil War; and
     7     WHEREAS, The Grand Army of the Republic Post 11 in Norristown
     8  has been named in his honor; and
     9     WHEREAS, A monument has been erected in his honor by Post 11
    10  at the Gettysburg Battlefield; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
    12  177th anniversary of the birth of Brevet Major General Samuel
    13  Kurtz Zook.
