A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing May 2 through 8, 1999, as "Brain Tumor Awareness 2 Week." 3 WHEREAS, The North American Brain Tumor Coalition has 4 announced that the second annual Brain Tumor Awareness Week is 5 being held May 2 through 8, 1999, to educate the public about 6 the impact of brain tumors as well as to highlight the need for 7 increased research funding to help unlock the mysteries of this 8 disease, which is currently the second leading cause of cancer 9 deaths in children under the age of 15; and 10 WHEREAS, Each year approximately 100,000 people in the United 11 States will be diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain 12 tumor; and 13 WHEREAS, Brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer 14 deaths for people to age 34; and
1 WHEREAS, The incidence of brain tumors is increasing, 2 especially among the elderly, and the reason for this increase 3 are unknown; and 4 WHEREAS, There are more than 100 different types of brain 5 tumors, making effective treatment very complicated, with 6 present conventional treatment consisting of surgery, radiation 7 therapy and chemotherapy, used either singly or in combination; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, Treating brain tumors is difficult because of their 10 location in the control center for thought, movement and emotion 11 and treatment often has serious and lasting side effects on the 12 patient's physical and cognitive abilities; and 13 WHEREAS, Only 37% of men and 52% of women survive five years 14 following the diagnosis of a primary benign or malignant brain 15 tumor; and 16 WHEREAS, Brain tumors in children are different from those in 17 adults and are often treated differently, and although 60% of 18 children with brain tumors will survive the diagnosis and 19 treatment, they are often left with long-term side effects; and 20 WHEREAS, Enhancing the quality of life of people with brain 21 tumors requires access to quality specialty care and ready 22 availability of follow-up care and rehabilitative services, and 23 improving the outlook for adults and children with brain tumors 24 requires research into the causes and better treatments for 25 brain tumors; and 26 WHEREAS, The North American Brain Tumor Coalition is a 27 collaboration of eight charitable organizations which is 28 dedicated to eliminating brain tumors and which seeks to educate 29 the public about the impact of brain tumors and advocates 30 increased research funding and access to specialty care; and 19990H0093R1190 - 2 -
1 WHEREAS, The coalition member organizations, representing 2 more than 200,000 patients, family members and friends, have 3 raised funds from private sources and have awarded more than $18 4 million for research related to brain tumors; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 6 week of May 2 through 8, 1999, as "Brain Tumor Awareness Week" 7 and congratulate the North American Brain Tumor Coalition in its 8 work toward eliminating brain tumors and educating the public 9 about the impact of brain tumors.
