A RESOLUTION 1 Urging the Governor to proclaim April 12, 1997, as "Families of 2 Murder Victims Day." 3 WHEREAS, Families of Murder Victims is an organization which 4 was established in Philadelphia in 1980; and 5 WHEREAS, Families of murder victims often suffer extensive 6 physical, emotional, spiritual and economic trauma from the loss 7 of their loved ones; and 8 WHEREAS, Families of Murder Victims makes available the only 9 program of its kind in the country to provide comfort and 10 support for families and friends of murder victims through a 11 variety of free services which include explaining complex legal 12 procedures while accompanying them to court proceedings, 13 assisting in filing applications for crime victims'
1 compensation, counseling, making referrals to a network of 2 service professionals, holding support group meetings and 3 publishing a newsletter and handbook; and 4 WHEREAS, Families of Murder Victims is a private nonprofit 5 program housed in but independent of the District Attorney's 6 Office, and there is a strong working relationship between the 7 two; and 8 WHEREAS, Families of Murder Victims provides services such as 9 lectures and workshops for professionals and families of 10 homicide victims nationwide; and 11 WHEREAS, During 1996, over 3,500 contacts were made to the 12 organization by families and friends of murder victims; and 13 WHEREAS, On Saturday, April 12, 1997, Families of Murder 14 Victims is holding its seventh annual candlelight ceremony; 15 therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Governor 17 to proclaim April 12, 1997, as "Families of Murder Victims Day"; 18 and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 20 His Excellency, the Governor, the Honorable Tom Ridge.
