INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 19, 2007
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating April 28, 2007, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Every year on April 28, communities and worksites 4 around the world honor friends, family members and colleagues 5 who have been killed or injured on the job; and 6 WHEREAS, The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported 7 more than 5,700 annual workplace fatalities, nearly 50,000 8 annual deaths due to occupational diseases and in excess of 4 9 million yearly work-related injuries and illnesses in recent 10 years; and 11 WHEREAS, More than 200 workers are lost annually through 12 fatal workplace accidents in this Commonwealth; and 13 WHEREAS, While news reports often focus our attention on 14 disastrous workplace events, most of these workers die 15 individually with little public attention; and
1 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to honor the memory of the 2 courageous and dedicated members of Pennsylvania's labor force 3 who have died as a result of workplace accidents; and 4 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize workers who have been 5 injured or disabled in workplace accidents; and 6 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize the integrity of 7 Pennsylvania's work force and its achievements on behalf of the 8 economic growth of our Commonwealth; and 9 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to call for vigilance and 10 increased safety in the workplace; and 11 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives wishes to pay tribute 12 to workers who have died or who have been injured or disabled in 13 workplace accidents, to honor the contributions of 14 Pennsylvania's work force and to call for increased workplace 15 safety; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April 17 28, 2007, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
