HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 152 Session of 1999


        INTRODUCED BY HORSEY, YOUNGBLOOD, BISHOP, CARN, JAMES, THOMAS,
           ROEBUCK, WASHINGTON, KIRKLAND, MYERS, OLIVER, PRESTON, RAMOS,
           ROBINSON AND EVANS, APRIL 20, 1999

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 20, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring April 24, 1999, as "St. Peter Claver Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The Knights of Peter Claver was founded November 7,
     4  1907, in Mobile, Alabama, to commemorate St. Peter Claver and
     5  was incorporated July 12, 1911; and
     6     WHEREAS, Over the course of its history, the order has had 13
     7  Supreme Knights; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Ladies Auxiliary was recognized as a Division of
     9  the National Council at Galveston, Texas, in August 1926; and
    10     WHEREAS, In 1930 the Junior Daughters was established and the
    11  Constitution of the Junior Knights was revised, and the Junior
    12  Daughters was recognized as a Division of the National Council
    13  effective October 1, 1935; and
    14     WHEREAS, The Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver is an
    15  organization filled with limitless opportunities for zealous
    16  Catholics to work for their parish, bishops, priests and laity
    17  giving Claverism such strong support through the years that it

     1  comprises more than 100,000 Catholic men and women; and
     2     WHEREAS, In the United States, the order operates in more
     3  than 47 archdioceses and dioceses and has received the Apostolic
     4  Benediction of the Most Holy Father in Rome on many occasions;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, The Knights of Peter Claver and the Ladies Auxiliary
     7  have participated in the charitable appeals of many Catholic
     8  institutions and churches, making noteworthy contributions to
     9  various national, State and local organizations; and
    10     WHEREAS, Claverism was established in Philadelphia in 1976;
    11  therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare April 24,
    13  1999, as "St. Peter Claver Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it
    14  further
    15     RESOLVED, That, on the eve of the Northern District
    16  Conference of the Knights of Peter Claver and the Ladies
    17  Auxiliary, the House of Representatives extend best wishes to
    18  the members of this most prestigious and largest African-
    19  American Catholic organization and applaud its significant
    20  accomplishments and contributions in serving others throughout
    21  the United States.
