A RESOLUTION
1Commemorating the 151st anniversary of the origin of Taps, our
2nation's most recognizable bugle call.
3WHEREAS, The military bugle call Taps is our nation's most
4recognizable bugle call, whose forceful music and use is
5employed by the United States military at funerals, memorial
6services and wreath-laying ceremonies; and
7WHEREAS, The signal of Extinguish Lights at the end of the
8day was revised by Union General Daniel Butterfield, with the
9help of his brigade's bugler, Oliver Willcox Norton in July
101862, into the music for Taps; and
11WHEREAS, Taps, also known as "Butterfield's Lullaby," began
12to be used by other units of the Union Army and may have been
13used by the Confederates; and
14WHEREAS, It was made an official bugle call after the Civil
15War and its mandatory use at military funeral ceremonies dates
1back to 1891; and
2WHEREAS, There are no official lyrics to Taps, but the
3following verses are the most popular:
4Day is done, gone the sun
5From the lake, from the hill
6From the sky
7All is well, safely rest,
8God is nigh
10Thanks and praise,
11For our days,
12'Neath the sun, 'neath the
13stars, 'neath the sky,
14As we go, this we know,

29WHEREAS, Its powerful melody invokes reflection of and honor
30for the men and women that served this country; therefore be it
1RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
2151st anniversary of the origin of Taps, our nation's most
3recognizable bugle call.
