INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 3, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the memory of police officers who gave their lives in 2 the line of duty in this Commonwealth and recognizing the 3 memorial services in their honor in Soldiers' Grove at the 4 State Capitol on May 7, 2001, and in Hollidaysburg, Blair 5 County, on June 2, 2001. 6 WHEREAS, Trooper Matthew R. Bond of the Pennsylvania State 7 Police paid the ultimate sacrifice on January 14, 2000; and 8 WHEREAS, Officer John Ayello of the Hamburg Police Department 9 paid the ultimate sacrifice on September 8, 2000; and 10 WHEREAS, Officer Jose M. Ortiz of the Philadelphia Police 11 Department paid the ultimate sacrifice on September 21, 2000;
1 and 2 WHEREAS, The deaths of these police officers make a total of 3 627 officers who, through the year 2000, made the ultimate 4 sacrifice since the beginning of law enforcement within this 5 Commonwealth; and 6 WHEREAS, A Venango County constable who died in April 1825 is 7 believed to be the first officer to have given his life in the 8 line of duty in this Commonwealth; and 9 WHEREAS, "National Police Memorial Day" is held on May 15 10 each year; and 11 WHEREAS, The week of May 13 through 19, 2001, is "National 12 Police Week"; and 13 WHEREAS, On October 1, 1962, Joint Resolution 730 of the 87th 14 Congress of the United States was signed, authorizing the 15 President to proclaim May 15 of each year as "Peace Officers 16 Memorial Day"; and 17 WHEREAS, Twenty years passed before the first "National 18 Police Memorial Day" was recognized on May 15, 1982; and 19 WHEREAS, May 15 has continued to be observed annually in 20 memory of those police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice 21 in the line of duty; therefore be it 22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory 23 of Trooper Matthew R. Bond and Officers John Ayello and Jose M. 24 Ortiz, the police officers who gave their lives in the line of 25 duty in this Commonwealth in 2000; and be it further 26 RESOLVED, That the annual police memorial ceremony presented 27 by the Pennsylvania State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police 28 on May 7, 2001, at noon in Soldiers' Grove on the grounds of the 29 State Capitol recognize and remember these brave men; and be it 30 further 20010H0205R1820 - 2 -
1 RESOLVED, That the 10th annual memorial service presented by 2 the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association on June 2, 2001, 3 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hollidaysburg, Blair County, be 4 recognized as a fitting tribute to the memory of these heroic 5 police officers.
