           JUNE 15, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating the citizens of California Borough, Washington
     2     County, on the 150th anniversary of its founding.

     3     WHEREAS, The citizens of California Borough, Washington
     4  County, are marking the 150th year since the driving vision of
     5  Job Johnson led to the borough's creation; and
     6     WHEREAS, The high-minded dream of opportunity and the promise
     7  of a better life that fueled the California Gold Rush of 1849
     8  inspired the founders of California Borough to choose that name
     9  over all others available to them; and
    10     WHEREAS, The original English, German, Welsh and Scotch-Irish
    11  settlers of the area have since been joined by people from many
    12  other ethnic and racial origins, including immigrants from
    13  Mediterranean, Eastern European, Asian, African and Latin
    14  countries, all seeking the dream of a better life; and
    15     WHEREAS, The dedication of Job Johnson to the Underground
    16  Railway before and during the Civil War exemplifies the
    17  borough's commitment to freedom and to the opportunity for a


     1  better life for all people; and
     2     WHEREAS, The borough, which is situated by the great
     3  Monongahela River and which has drawn its life from the river,
     4  attests to the statement of Job Johnson that "living along that
     5  river is all we need" and to a collective belief that the life
     6  of the community will continue as long as the great river
     7  continues to flow; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
     9  citizens of California Borough upon the observance of their
    10  sesquicentennial anniversary and salute the spirit of their
    11  founding and of their continued life together as a community.
