WHEREAS, While employed as manager of the Office of Equal
Opportunity, Ms. Johnson created a program called "Classroom on
Wheels," where bus drivers would visit schools to foster better
relationships between drivers and young riders; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson was a guest at the White House three
times during President Lyndon B. Johnson's administration to
discuss race relations; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson was a founding member of the Black
Women's Political Crusade and the Program for Female Offenders;
and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson served on the boards of the National
Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs,
Inc., the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's Advisory
Committee, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the Dwelling
House Savings and Loan Association, the Pittsburgh Job Corp, the
Spirit of King Committee and the Bethel AME Church Trustee
Board; and
WHEREAS, During her many years of service Ms. Johnson was
recognized for a number of awards, including Iota Phi Lambda's
Woman of the Year Award, the New Pittsburgh Courier's
Distinguished Citizen Award and the J.C. Penney Golden Rule
Award; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson was named one of Talk Magazine's 25 Most
Influential Black Women of 1976 and one of Freedom Corner's
Legends of the Movement; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson died on March 8, 2017, at the age of 94;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor and
celebrate the life, service and advocacy of Katie Everett
Johnson.
