A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of May 2009 as "Older Pennsylvanians

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, May has traditionally been recognized as "Older

4

Americans Month" in the United States, a month set aside both to

5

consider the special and continuing needs of our older citizens

6

and to alert them to the existence of services and benefits

7

available to them; and

8

WHEREAS, The Department of Health and Human Services'

9

Administration on Aging has announced that the theme for "Older

10

Americans Month 2009" is "Living Today for a Better Tomorrow";

11

and

WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize that older citizens

2

possess a wealth of experience, talent and wisdom and a

3

willingness to share them; and

4

WHEREAS, Older citizens highly value their freedom and

5

independence and want to remain in their homes and communities

6

as active and contributing citizens; and

7

WHEREAS, Over the next ten years, the largest demographic

8

change will be a 50% increase in the number of individuals 85

9

years of age and older, thereby prompting increasing demand for

10

health care and long-term care services; and

11

WHEREAS, In past years during the month of May, groups such

12

as the AARP and the Pennsylvania Council on Aging have provided

13

programs designed to educate the general public about the

14

special housing, health care and income security needs of the

15

2.4 million Pennsylvanians who are 60 years of age or older; and 

16

WHEREAS, It is appropriate to inform older citizens of the

17

wide variety of programs and services available to them,

18

including, but not limited to, PACE and PACENET, the Property

19

Tax and Rent Rebate Program, the fixed route and shared-ride

20

transportation programs and the numerous programs and services

21

provided through the network of 52 local area agencies on aging;

22

therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

24

month of May 2009 as "Older Pennsylvanians Month" in

25

Pennsylvania.
